Short Description

In this book Nikki Dhillon Keane aims to develop understanding of the different types of domestic abuse, examine the challenges faced by those who are victims and survivors and provide guidance on how best to offer the safe, knowledgeable and robust support needed to end suffering and save lives.

Description

Domestic abuse is frighteningly common even within church communities, and an inappropriate pastoral response, however well meant, can have disastrous consequences.

Nikki Dhillon Keane started working with victims and survivors of domestic abuse around seventeen years ago. Most of her early experience came from her work with people in the Deaf community, where rates of domestic abuse are roughly twice those outside it; one in two Deaf women will experience domestic abuse at some point in their life. Since then, she have worked with a wide range of victims and survivors and led training events for therapists and people working in church settings to help deepen their understanding of domestic abuse. In 2013 Nikki was invited to join the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales Domestic Abuse Working Group. The group was set up in response to a domestic homicide review after a husband murdered his Catholic wife and her teenage son who was trying to protect her.
