The feast of All Souls

Perhaps today you are thinking of someone whom you dearly loved and who has died. Perhaps your heart is aching and you’re wishing that you could see and talk to that person, even if only for a couple of minutes. It doesn’t matter if that person died an hour or so ago or if many years have passed, you are filled with memories and, perhaps a lump in your throat and pricking eyes.

Isn’t it a lovely thought that today is a special day when people across the world are remembering and praying for their deceased friends and relatives? On the feast of All Souls, you are praying for someone who is precious in your life – and so is everyone else. At the same time, you are also helping others to find comfort and hope in their bereavement. Today is a wonderful moment of global sharing and solidarity. From the feast of All Souls and throughout November when, in a special way, we remember those who have died, some countries even arrange dedicated public transport to help people travel to cemeteries.

“It is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins” (2 Maccabees 12:46). We believe that, even retrospectively, our prayers are powerful ways of supporting and communicating with our loved ones who are, literally, only a thought away from us. How often do we not only pray for, but also pray to them? They, in return, can pray for us. Our prayers are a tangible sign of our continuing love – and where there is love, there is God.

Today is also a day of celebration because we believe in the resurrection. Death isn’t the end of the story. I often think of my nephew’s childhood wisdom when my sister took him on a shortcut through a graveyard. Little Robert asked what the graves were and, on hearing his mother’s explanation, declared, “I didn’t know that Heaven is so close!” Death is a doorway to life.
